For the past 10 years Worklink has held a National Stress Less Day Luncheon during Mental Health Week. The luncheon is attended by the business community and their employees, mental health professionals, community based organisations, Worklink's staff and jobseekers. This years event will be held on October 10th. This luncheon attracts high profile speakers and this year is no exception, with Hayley Lewis, Olympic Champion and host of The Biggest Loser (Australia) as guest speaker.
The luncheon, celebrated during Mental Health Week, is a great way of creating awareness and reducing the stigma associated to a mental health condition. This event is well supported by the Cairns community.
Last year Mike Munro, successful journalist, was guest speaker at the luncheon which attracted 400 guests at the Cairns Convention Centre. Mike's speech was on how he overcame adversity in his childhood years to become the success he is today
In 2010, 450 people had lunch with Garry McDonald, famous for his acting roles in 'Mother and Son" and as Norman Gunston. Garry who battles anxiety and depression is also a mental health advocate. Garry spoke about how depression and anxiety ruled his life and shared his story on recovery.
In 2009, Dr Jonathon Welch from the Choir of Hope and Inspiration (formally known as the Choir of Hard Knocks) spoke to 300 people at the Sebel Cairns about his work with the choir and his own battles with depression. Jonathon delighted the audience with an array of songs.
The number of people who wish to attend the luncheon has grown expotentially over the years, therefore Worklink has had to relocate to a bigger venue, the Cairns Convention Centre. As it is the 10th anniversary this year, the luncheon is expected to be bigger and better. So make sure you get your tickets early this year.
